Why site readiness matters
The fastest way to delay a new autoclave is often not the machine. It is the room: a service that was not ready, a drain in the wrong place, a doorway no one measured or a floor that needs checking before the unit can be positioned.
A good site survey brings those issues to the surface early. It turns installation day from a gamble into a planned job, which matters when the lab is waiting to bring a new autoclave into service.
Power and isolation
Autoclaves vary widely in their electrical requirements, from smaller single-phase units to larger three-phase floor-standing machines. The supply, rating and isolation should be confirmed before delivery, not improvised once the machine is on site.
The key questions are straightforward: what supply is required, where is the isolator, is it within reach of the machine, and has the site allowed for the actual load rather than a rough assumption?
Water, steam and air
The site also needs to define how the chamber is filled and what water quality is required. Some applications may use potable water; others may need treated water such as deionised or reverse-osmosis supply, potentially with softening depending on the installation and machine specification.
Steam and compressed air should also be considered early. Does the site have a suitable direct steam supply, or does the unit need its own generator? Is compressed air available, and is air ballast required for liquid cooling? Each answer affects both the autoclave specification and the site preparation.
Drainage, floor and access
Condensate and blow-down need somewhere suitable to go, at the right height and within reach. Drain position, route and fall can be awkward to fix after the machine has arrived.
Floor strength and access are just as important. The lab should know whether the floor is suitable, whether a spreader plate is needed, and whether the autoclave will fit through the doorway, along the corridor, around turns and into its final position. Door widths and access routes decide more installations than buyers expect.
What this means for installation day
None of this is difficult, but it does need to be settled before delivery. A short survey can prevent avoidable delays and make installation feel routine rather than improvised.
