Sterilisation in a clinical diagnostics laboratory

Why compact capacity can still matter

A 135-litre top-loading format gives useful working capacity without demanding the floor space of a larger front-loader. That can be important in diagnostic laboratories, where space is often heavily contested and the autoclave has to fit into an already busy workflow.

The aim is not simply to have a machine that fits the room. It has to support a real daily workload, run reliably for the team using it, and provide dependable decontamination when waste is safety-critical.

Typical diagnostic-lab workload

In clinical diagnostics, the autoclave workload usually runs in two directions at once: preparing culture media, plates and glassware for testing, and decontaminating used cultures, plates and contaminated consumables before disposal. In many labs, the waste stream is the larger and more safety-critical part of the job.

A typical arrangement might use a 121 °C, 15-minute cycle for suitable culture media, with contaminated diagnostic waste taken through a separate discard cycle held at 121°C or above before it leaves the laboratory. Site procedures and risk assessments should define the final cycle parameters.
